Thirty officers at a Southern California juvenile detention facility have been charged for their role in facilitating so-called “gladiator fights” between youth in their care, the state's attorney general said Monday.

California's attorney general on Monday announced the unsealing of an indictment charging 30 detention officers assigned to a Los Angeles-area juvenile hall with child abuse for allegedly allowing and sometimes encouraging so-called gladiator fights among youths.

The fights occurred over a six-month period 2023 and involved 143 victims ranging in age from 12 to 18, according to the Department of Justice.
