TikTok went offline in the United States Saturday night, less than two hours before a ban was slated to go into effect.

NEW YORK (AP) — During his first term as president, Donald Trump led the effort to ban TikTok, the hugely popular video-sharing site he said posed a threat to U.S. national security. But on the eve of his return to the White House, the president-elect is being hailed as the app’s savior.

TikTok thanks Trump for giving companies that carry the platform enough “clarity and assurance” to restore U.S. access, the latest dizzying development in the battle over the app.

The app went dark nationwide on Saturday night, but the company indicated it was in the process of restoring the service after assurances from President-elect Donald J. Trump.

TikTok is unavailable for millions of users in the United States, reports say. NBC News reports the app began displaying a message saying, “Sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now.”

After six and a half years in the United States, TikTok is officially going dark on user's devices across the country.
