A suspect is now facing charges in connection with the unintentional shooting death of a Chicago police officer.

The partner was the only person who fired a weapon, and the “gunfire unintentionally struck Officer Rivera,” city police said in a statement Friday. An autopsy showed she was shot in the back.

Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera was accidentally shot and killed by her partner during a confrontation with an armed suspect Thursday night on the South Side, officials said.

"That officer is in a very, very tough place; unimaginable what that officer has to be feeling right now," Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling said.
