The New Mexico men’s basketball team has found a replacement for departed head coach Richard Pitino. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Lobos and UC San Dieg
New Mexico has hired UC San Diego’s Eric Olen as its next basketball coach. Olen will replace Richard Pitino, who left to become Xavier’s coach on Tuesday.
Chris Mack is a better coach. Richard Pitino is a better choice. Xavier University apparently passed on the opportunity to run it back with a coach who has deep ties to the Musketeers program, deciding instead to bring in a new voice and fresh perspective.
The New Mexico Lobos fell short in their quest for a 2025 Final Four appearance under coach Richard Pitino, who came to Albuquerque, New Mexico from Minnesota prior to the 2021-2022 season. Pitino led the Lobos to a Mountain West Conference Tournament Championship in 2023-2024 before securing a 2024-2025 regular season crown.
Donovan Dent scored 21 points in the Lobos' NCAA tournament win over Marquette, and 14 in their Round of 32 loss to Michigan State.
