A federal judge has blocked a Texas law that has for decades given college students without legal residency in the U.S. access to reduced in-state tuition, swiftly ruling in favor of the latest effort by the Trump administration to to crack down on immigration into the country.

The law was passed in 2001 to allow young adults who were in the United States illegally to pay reduced in-state tuition if they met certain residency criteria.

The Justice Department filed a lawsuit Wednesday alleging that the state of Texas is discriminating against out-of-state college students by allowing undocumented immigrants residing in Texas access to in-state tuition rates.
