The Atlantic hurricane season started on June 1 and is predicted to be more active than usual this year. A busy hurricane season would test the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the aftermath of President Donald Trump’s dramatic cuts to its disaster programs.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he plans to phase out the Federal Emergency Management Agency after this year’s hurricane season, offering the clearest timeline yet for his administration’s long-term plans to dismantle the disaster relief agency and shift responsibility for response and recovery onto states.

The FEMA Review Council, among other things, is eyeing how states qualify for federal aid and differing levels of federal support for natural disasters.
