Republican California Assemblyman Bill Essayli is pledging to "dismantle" his state's status as a popular sanctuary for illegal immigrants after President Donald Trump tapped him this week to head up a team of prosecutors for the nation's largest federal district court by population.

Riverside County Assemblyman Bill Essayli has accepted an appointment to be the United States Attorney for California's Central District.

A bill that would restrict immigration enforcement at California schools cleared a state Senate committee — with the support of Democrats and one Republican. The legislation, SB 48, would make it illegal for schools to allow immigration authorities onto campus, question students or search school property without a valid warrant or court order.

The attorney general has selected Riverside County Assemblymember Bill Essayli — a rising and controversial Republican voice — to serve as interim U.S. attorney for L.A. and surrounding areas.

A California State Assembly committee killed two bills on Tuesday that would have restricted transgender athletes from playing on girls' sports teams.

“I am honored that President Trump and Attorney General (Pam) Bondi have placed their trust in me to serve as United States Attorney for the Central District of California,” Essayli, a former federal prosecutor, said in a news release.
