Chipmaker Intel Corp said on Thursday it expects its workforce to shrink by more than 25,000 employees this year as the struggling chipmaker intensifies efforts to cut costs and revive growth, amid mounting losses and slowing construction plans.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan told employees in a staff-wide memo yesterday that the company plans to cut its workforce by roughly 15%—more than 25,000 jobs—aiming to end the year with about 75,000 employees worldwide. The cuts are part of the struggling chipmaker’s efforts to turn things around and compete in the booming AI market.

Intel’s plans appeared to deflate investors. Intel shares took a hit, with Intel’s market value showing a loss of $8 billion at one point, according to Reuters. Meanwhile, AMD is riding the AI wave to greater sales, and Nvidia’s value has exploded over the past few years, also thanks to its AI-friendly chips.
